Which calculator should I use?

Start with the question you want to answer. You can change the inputs to compare options; use the same assumptions across scenarios so the difference is meaningful.

Salary vs Freelance

Comparing employment with freelance work? Look at employment package value alongside freelance revenue and costs. Include employer pension contributions, expenses and realistic billable time rather than comparing headline salary with turnover alone.

Need a target rate before considering freelance work? Estimate the hourly rate needed to match your salary and employer pension package over your planned billable hours. It is a comparison point, not a guarantee of earnings.

How our calculations work

Tax-related estimates use the UK tax-year rules shown in each tool, currently 2026/27, checked against GOV.UK and HMRC guidance. Conversions depend on working hours and weeks; check the defaults and adjust them where the tool allows.

Results are estimates. Tax codes, pensions, student loans, payroll timing and personal circumstances can change actual pay. Freelance comparisons also depend on costs and unpaid time. Read our calculation methodology and assumptions for the approach, official sources and limits.
